Description

Freeze-dried organic acerola powder

Acerola, or Barbados cherry, is a berry native to Central and South America. It belongs to the Malpighiaceae family and grows up to 4.5 metres tall. The tree has broad branches and evergreen oval leaves. The small pinkish-white flowers turn into reddish-orange or bright red juicy fruits, which are round in shape.
The acerola variety Malpighia glabra is particularly rich in vitamin C, which gives it a sour taste. It is ideal for making products that need a lot of vitamin C. Acerola is also rich in other vitamins and minerals (calcium, potassium, iron).
The edible part of the acerola is the fruit (botanically a berry), which is allowed to be sold as a fruit in Europe. Acerola is usually harvested green, as this is when it retains the most vitamin C – in this form it can contain twice as much vitamin C as ripe fruit. As the fruit spoils quickly after harvesting – becoming almost inedible within 3-5 days – acerola is freeze-dried to preserve as much of its nutrients as possible.

Freeze-dried acerola powder comes from Brazil, one of the world’s largest producers of acerola. Certified according to the Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848 and the UK Organic Standards approved by the Soil Association under code GB-ORG-05.

Serving recommendations:
The powder is ready to eat as such or as an ingredient in cooking.
Recommended intake: 3-5 g per day.

Usage:
Mix acerola powder with water, consume as a refreshing drink.
Add to cocktails, smoothies or juices;
Use in desserts such as ice cream, cakes or fruit salads;
Add to a dry breakfast, porridge or muesli;
As an ingredient in baked goods or sauces.

Acerola is a natural and nutritious fruit, but due to its extremely high vitamin C content, it can cause mild indigestion in some people, especially when consumed in large quantities. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur. If you have health problems or are taking medication, you should be careful when taking acerola.
