class=\"ryNqvb\">What is a star anise?<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"et\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Star anise is actually the dried fruit of a tree known scientifically as Illicium verum.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Dried fruit from northeastern Vietnam and southwest China is often ground into powder and used as a spice in certain dishes.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This fruit has been used in cooking and traditional medicine for thousands of years.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The name star anise is a combination of the shape of the plant and the similarity in flavour to anise.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Although the plants are not related, the anethole present in both plants gives liquorice its distinctive flavour, which is why it is so popular in cooking.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The most popular spices containing star anise are the Chinese &#8216;5 spice blend&#8217; and the Indian &#8216;Garam masala&#8217;.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This star-shaped spice is highly sought after for its active chemical compounds, especially those found in star anise oil.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The plant also contains a compound called chikimic acid, which is a very important part of the world&#8217;s flu medicines.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">It takes a year to extract and process this acid, so the price of star anise is largely driven by global demand for flu anethole, and kaempferol, and is high in iron.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">However, it is lower in vitamin C, calcium, potassium and magnesium.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Other active compounds and organic acids, such as shikimic acid, fats and fibre, also provide additional health benefits when consumed with star anise.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Star anise is also relatively low in calories, with only 23 calories per tablespoon.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
