Originating in South America, peanuts have a long history dating back to ancient civilisations such as the Incas and Aztecs, who cultivated and consumed them as a staple food. Peanuts later spread to other parts of the world and became an important crop in Africa, Asia and North America. Even though peanuts are botanically legumes, they are often called nuts because of their nutritional value and uses.
Peanuts are an excellent source of protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals. They are also excellent sources of plant protein, which is potentially beneficial for muscle growth and recovery. Peanuts also contain antioxidants.

Peanuts are consumed in a variety of ways – on their own, roasted, as nut butter or added to baked goods, salads, snacks and other dishes. Groundnut oil is also popular for its high acidity and mild flavour, which is why it is widely used in cooking.

People with nut allergies should avoid peanuts as they can cause serious allergic reactions.

The recommended daily intake of peanuts is around 28-30 grams (shelled, soaked before eating is recommended) to ensure a good balance of nutrients and to avoid excess calorie intake.
