Ground cardamom is a valuable and popular spice that adds flavour to both food and drinks. Traditionally, ground cardamom is used in many countries to flavour coffee and is added to sweets, biscuits and gingerbread (especially during the winter holidays). It is used to flavour sweet yeast and other doughy baked goods, and in spicy stews and seitan steaks.
Cardamom has a refreshing effect, so in ancient times, and still today in some countries, cardamom was chewed after meals to improve breath.
