Organic Borlotti (Pinto) beans
Borlotti beans, also known as cranberry beans, originate from South America, particularly Brazil and the Columbia. They arrived in Europe during the colonial period and became particularly popular in Italy, where they are now often called fagioli borlotti. They are widely used in Italian cuisine in soups, stews and pasta dishes.
Borlotti beans have a mild, slightly nutty flavour and a floury-creamy texture, making them ideal as an ingredient in a wide range of diets and also for use in a variety of dishes.
Soak the beans overnight and then rinse under running water. Boil 1 cup of beans in about 3 cups of water for about 1 hour (or as needed) over low heat. Add the salt at the end of cooking.
Usage:
Soups and stews – especially popular in pasta e fagioli or vegetable stews.
Salads – cooked Borlotti beans are perfect in both warm and cold salads.
Sauces and additives – beans can be used to make bean puree or as an additive to vegetable dishes.
Macaroni and cheese – beans are often added to pasta with tomato or vegetable sauce.
They are also ideal for corn and rice dishes.
