Basil has long been used for a variety of purposes, including as an important part of religious practices, widely in herbal mixtures and often in cooking.

The essential oil distilled from the leaves of Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil) is also known as sweet basil oil. The oil’s refreshing aroma is said to help focus and increase determination. It can also neutralise unpleasant odours. Using basil oil at home helps to clean the air and is also thought to reduce the risk of illness. The scent of basil is quite intense and can easily dominate aromatic blends.

When applied to the skin, basil oil has a cleansing, trimming and stimulating effect, leaving the skin fresher and brighter. Basil oil can also promote healthy hair growth and improve scalp circulation.
